Miss SNPJ 1996: Strabane, Pa., Lodge 138

With a life rich in the ethnic traditions of her Slovenian heritage, Allison Engel was selected the Society’s 40th Miss SNPJ and Miss Activity at the 1995 National SNPJ Days celebration held at the SNPJ Recreation Center.

Miss SNPJ 1996 is a member of Lodge 138 in Strabane, Pa. She is the daughter of Edward and Agnes Engel of Strabane and has one brother, Edward Jr. Her maternal grandparents are the late George and Mary (Zigon) Klobucher of Strabane, and her paternal grandparents are the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Greza) Engel of Strabane.

Allison  began participating in Youth Circle 19 activities at the age of 3. Her involvement with the group originated through participation in a multitude of seasonal parties and programs. Other activities highlighting her youth, included singing with the former Circle 19 Singers, attending Youth Roundup, bowling, contributing to The Voice of Youth, serving as a Circle officer and representing the Circle at SNPJ Youth Conventions.

Allison has taken an active role in Lodge 138 affairs, serving as a Lodge officer, regularly participating in Lodge events, assisting at Circle 19 functions and representing the Lodge at regional Federation gatherings. She has served on the Miss SNPJ Pageant Committee for a number of years, and has been active in Slovenefest, National SNPJ Days, SNPJ Young Adult Conferences and the Teens Experience Leadership program. She was selected as a Young Adult Representative to the National Board, as well as a Young Adult Representative and a Lodge 138 representative to SNPJ National Conventions.

Allison earned a bachelor’s degree in international economics from Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va.; a certificate in Spanish studies from the University of Navarre in Pamplona, Spain; a Slovenian Language Proficiency Certificate from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia; and a master’s in business administration in finance from the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business.

Allison’s career in the banking industry spans over a decade of experience, including private wealth management, international corporate banking and investment banking at Mellon Bank and PNC Bank in Pittsburgh. Allison is currently serving as a director at PNC Capital Markets where she is responsible for new business development in the asset securitization group. She is a General Securities Registered Representative with the NASD.

Miss SNPJ 1996 is fluent in the Slovenian language and visits Slovenia regularly. She served as a U.S. liaison promoting the annual Young Adult Tour to Slovenia sponsored by the Slovenian Ministry of Education and Sport which allows young adults of Slovenian descent the opportunity to visit their homeland. She also coordinated the U.S. art exhibition tour of Slovenian artist Vinko Bogataj, often known for his spectacular ski jumping crash representing “The Agony of Defeat” in the opening montage of ABC’s Wide World of Sports. In her free time, Allison enjoys traveling, rowing, skiing and golfing, and is actively involved in the University of Pittsburgh and Bethany College alumni communities. She resides in the Edgewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
